Edwin was born in Baarlo (Netherlands), into a family working in livestock trading since 2 generations. Horses have always been a passion in the family, both breeding and competition, and, since Edwin discovered his own passion, also show jumping. Edwin learned the basics at his grandparent’s farm, and became a professional with the support of his parents, José and Wim Smits.
He enters the world of competitions at the age of 13, but horse riding remains a hobby until the age of 18, when he gets his diploma in agriculture. At this moment, he decides to become a rider and a horse trader, while still continuing his activities in the family business and an education in management. At the age of 21 he finally takes the step and founds his own company, renting a barn with a riding hall and 30 boxes and earns his certificate as an international trainer. ‘Stal Edwin Smits’ is born!
In 1999 Edwin meets Harry Willems, a retired farmer who gives him the financial possibility to keep several horses to ride at the highest level. The same year, he starts his career in international competitions with a victory at the Grand-Prix of Luxembourg – a very promising debut, followed by many excellent results and participations in the nation’s cup tournament for his country, the Netherlands. At this time, he is invited to join the Elite of the Dutch team, and meanwhile his horses are sold to customers all over the world. At the same time, Edwin bought his own barn in the Nederlands.
Edwin meets Dehlia in 2003, and one year later Edwin sells his barn in the Netherlands in order to come and live in Chevenez, just a few days before the inauguration of the new riding centre that has been founded by Charles Burrus and his family.
Ecurie Dehlia Oeuvray & Edwin Smits has been a great success.
